Last Day before School

This morning I awoke to whispered excitement "It's the last day before school" and I realized the joy that used to arrive with fresh pens and notebooks and new jeans and sneaks. Excited to catch up with friends we hadn't seen all summer, we would race down the three blocks to school that seemed like miles and miles. Two little cuties are watching Judy Moody with smiles aplenty and new backpacks perched beside the door.

Remembering days of yearning to learn anew I grinned back and snuggled up to enjoy one more day of down time. I know I relish these long weekends as I sit on the other side of the desk.

Creating syllabi and stashing essentials in a to do pile, I grade essays aplenty from my summer classes and am glad that kids still want to start again. The vitality of expectation is a beautiful thing.
