Paper Weights and a Good Book

Hi All!

This week, as I relax for a work-less week (well no commuting anyway) I've got a few things up online to share.

First, Check out my review of Murder Takes Time on Indie Reader. This is a great story and really kept me hooked!

Also, take a peek at this week's Paper Weights for some SEX TALK (don't you want to see what I'm talking about?)

And if you are looking for something to read: ALIKE but INDIE should help you along. A new one is coming Thursday--stay tuned!

Also, I have several author interviews in the works & chose to focus on those who are my favorites, so come on back and visit for an update. In the meantime, if you missed it, here is my interview with Awesome Chick Lit Indie Laurel Osterkamp who rocks, and has a free novella for download called Campaign Promises. Check it out :)

Also recommended:

Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward (I just finished reading and was cringing through the dog fighting aspect, but it really packs a punch about Hurricane Katrina)

Dogs Have Angels Too by Sarah Cavallaro (Reading it now and can't wait to review it--so realistic!)

Missing the Land of the Sun!

As I sit watching torrential down pouring water slosh from the gutters, and try to soothe my pups as they quiver at the sound of thunderclaps...I'd rather be on a beach! (Yeah that's "their couch" they ate it they own it I suppose)
Funny how I thought I would enjoy being here again, sleeping in my own bed (instead of a king size that was made up for me as soon as I left for my morning swim) and cooking healthy food (instead of being served oysters on a half shell) and of course, back to the gym (replacing the Olympic size swimming pol and hot tub).... Not funny! Send me back! Please?

Since I left you last, I spent a wonderful day in Santa Barbara with my friend Sarah, visiting her local wine club for a tasting (I know!) and lunching on the pier at the harbor. Catching up on the way too long in between our last visit, we laughed hysterically several times--I sooo needed it!

Following my day of girltime, giggles and delicious fish and chips, was a romantic dinner at Blue Plate Oysterette and yes I know even the name is freakin brilliant. No joke, best oysters I've ever had and we have eaten TONS of the bodacious crustaceans!

All this inspired us to investigate an oystering permit for our September Cape Cod trip. I hear you can eat all you find...yummm. The bonus of the Blue Plate dinner? Smith Jerrod sat next to me at the oyster bar. Yep that guy. He looked great--the oysters had me riveted though (that means they were simply amazing)

Since Blue Plate is located right off the Santa Monica Pier, that's where we went to watch the sun descending towards the sea. A clear blue day allowed for unobstructed beauty in all directions. As we looked around, I thought--wow, imagine doing this every day after work instead of getting on a humid, filthy train. Then I put the thought out of my mind remaining calm and carrying on. No gloom on vacation! Well, that's not entirely true. This time of year, there is something that the locals call "June Gloom" which generally means the sun waits till afternoon to come out and burn us. Not too gloomy if you ask a whitey like me! (and I did get a bit pink in the morning through the haze anyway)

So all in all this was a beautiful trip. Swimming, sunning, book hunting, coffee finding & simply not having to BE anywhere but with my little self. I would tell anyone to try LA but it is downright dangerous to drive Rte 1 up the coast--you may want to stay... or at least smile as much as we did!

The middle one is worth a mention since it was taken at a FRESH MOZZARELLA BAR!
Who wouldn't want to have that in their neighborhood?

Pacific Coast My Way

After renting an affordable little car, we decided to drive to The Getty to start off our Saturday. On the way, we stopped in Venice Beach for Intelligentsia lattes. Hearing how amazing their coffee was, we couldn't resist. Thankfully we did the right thing. Best. Coffee. Ever. No need for sugar, served by the nicest people around and foamed in flower patterns atop savory deliciousness. A wonderful start to the 3rd day of relaxation.

Riding the tram through the hills on the way up to the museum, I saw a vineyard in someone's sprawling acreage, houses in the hills that seemed built in and glued to the mountainous terrain in fascinating patterns. As we pulled into the museum proper, I was excited to approach the gardens before tour groups started cramming in (10am was a perfect time to arrive--first ones there Rusty!) Beautiful flowers and a grassy maze adorned the outer portions of the Getty. A cactus garden viewed from above provided a prickly frame for a landscape of mountainous beauty.

Entering the inner exhibits, I saw sculptures and paintings and a fabulous exhibit of Herb Ritts photography called LA Style followed by another stroll through the outdoor areas to sip iced tea and discover a little chubby legged child frolicking by the fountains, testing the security guards' patience as a toe was dipped in and removed time and time again. Peaceful breezes reached under the alcove where we sat, and the most enjoyable feeling descended--relaxation. Knowing that all I had ahead of me was a drive along the coast I felt blissful and calm.

As we headed north there was a bit of traffic, but the Pacific Coast Highway is a sight not to be missed when in Cali. Reaching Santa Barbara, we sat at a harbor-side restaurant called Brophy Brothers and enjoyed a shrimp and avocado salad, oysters (yes again!) and locally brewed Anchor Steam. The perfect lunch followed by a stroll down the nearby jetty: brilliant!

Next we took the PCH south and wound through seaside towns and beach bliss. Spotting surfers at Zuma Beach, we slowed to watch for a while. As the tide came in, we discussed what to do for dinner, and I delighted that this was the biggest concern for the day. Returning at about 8pm, we decided to shower and walk across to the Century City mall across the way, and have some Thai food at Rock Sugar which proved an amazing last minute decision. The atmosphere was tranquil and the food was light but satisfying.

Also in the same Westfield shopping mall is a lunch gem called Bread Bar, that we visited the day before for Ahi Tuna Salads: divine. So I realize the perks of vacation--meals out, no cooking and a selection of whatever you desire--pretty sweet.

Today we went to Book Soup, a huge and amazing indie bookstore--more coming soon on that! After that we went to The Grove and met family for dinner and ice cream. After driving back, we luxuriated in a swim and a soak in the hot tub before bed (which is now)

Tomorrow I drive to Santa Barbara to visit my good friend who I haven't seen in way too long. Thanks for all this fun so far California! Love you so!

Peace and Palms,
Keri

Floating Content and Calm

California Love

It's been 2 days. I'm in love with California already. Now I understand why all my NYC people said they hope we come back. After a painless flight with lots of legroom, I wrapped up a bunch of work yesterday while sitting on our balcony, sipping iced tea and gazing on a fountain nine stories below.

Knowing that I didn't have to do much else on the way here but relax, I people watched at LAX and had a few laughs as luggage apparently is something that needs to be rushed to...why? Not sure, it will keep going around the little baggage carousel if you miss it on lap one. As our taxi took us towards Century City, I found it ironic that we (two Devils fans from NY) arrived on the day of the LA Kings parade. No, we didn't go to it, are you nuts! But we did get here in time to catch some of the Euro 2012 games on our swanky hotel's enormous flat screen as we dined on our first meal. Lunch was at 11:30 (technically 2:30 on our digestive systems' collective watch) and couldn't have been more delicious: Baha fish tacos with a creamy avocado sauce, nuff said!

Following lunch and a stroll around the pool, spa, gym and three food/drink spots we arrived at the lobby Starbucks (heavenly) and discovered that you get a free drink when you check in on Foursquare (bonus!) For dinner last night, we went to Gulfstream for Oysters and Dover Sole that is flown in only on Thursdays and Fridays from the North Atlantic. No way I was missing that! Melt in your mouth amazing, with creamy mashed potatoes and wilted spinach. Perfection on a plate joined by Deep Sea Red and shoulders are down.

Next was a walk around the outdoor mall that Gulfstream lives in where we grabbed an after dinner latte and cupcake at Vanilla (what a treat!) and returned content to our California King to read. Content and well traveled, I was asleep by 9pm (or midnight NY time-surprised I made it that far) and slept the first solid ten hours in I can't tell you how long. These would be our well rested, just ate oysters faces:

Up at 7am for a work call today, I felt refreshed and ready to delve into Day 2. I'm hunting for books and planning on lunch at a Brazillian place down the street. Tomorrow, we rent a car for the weekend and drive up the coast. I haven't felt so clear and calm in a very long time. And now to the pool before lunch!

Chomping at the Bit to Depart!

At the risk of sounding ridiculous (not sure if there is ever not a risk of that) I must note that I am looking forward to my 5am departure tomorrow for Los Angeles. As I type up one last book review at my NYC desk, I am thinking about how nice it will be to not have to answer the phone or any emails while on a plane for six hours. What does that say about my week? Well I will just leave it at happy to be getting on a plane...which is something I never thought I would hear my un-sedated self say out loud. Good thing I'm typing!

Already having been up since the puppy yapped at 5:00 this morning, I think my sleep schedule will not only improve with jet lag but may actually be a non-issue since I am so used to having so little sleep these days that my eyeballs are burning. Literally, they hurt from being open too long by the time they get to close for way too short of a time.

As I travel to California, I am anticipating being really relaxed and really productive at the same time. Think that will actually work? I do. Because if I'm not at work physically, I can be online in pajamas and dial into my conference calls despite it being 6:00 in the morning my time and nobody will remember I am not present--that's quite a likely scenario. We are all looking forward to a break from the grind, and I grin at the thought of not having to teach again until July 2nd. Yeah I know, everyone else gets summers off. I am fully aware of this. I'll take the bigger paycheck though...thanks!

While in CA I plan on doing minimal activity besides swimming, sunning, savoring seafood by the sea and sipping cooling cocktails by the pool. Complementary to these lackadaisical acts, I just found out there is a gym in my hotel (for a small fee per day) which will provide the balance I need when I start missing my fanatical spinning tendencies that keep me in check. Last, and most fun for me, I get to check out a couple of indie bookstores while I'm there, so if anyone has recommendations let me know please! I have a few in mind that I will be writing about, but am open to adding one or two additional stops on the journey. So all of my needs are taken care of, now and the last thing I need to do is fold my clothes in my suitcase and be on the way before the sun comes up.

I did get an email from the airline today stating that the seat one of us was sitting in was malfunctioning (huh?) and we were moved around. Since we were moved to row 35, we fixed that by relocating again and achieved seating in the low 20s...whew! In addition, I lost my window seat, gained an aisle and am now going to be responsible for ripping the door off and rescuing everyone aboard through the escape hatch in my row if the plane goes down. Hmm. Not sure how I feel about that just yet.

Overall, I have traded stories with other faculty today to discover that I am in fact, thankfully not the only one who feels that there is an air of pure evil in the way that papers are being written shoddily as the semester comes to a close. I mean, I want to go on break too, but you don't see me coming to work with no pants on (analogy to an essay without a conclusion) do you? Sigh...almost there...breathing deep.

So as I caffeinate tomorrow and ascend to the clouds for six hours, I have a mob thriller, a dog related novel and Swamplandia, which I have been trying to dig into and keep getting distracted by this thing called work (the nerve of it!) Hopefully I will be able to emulate the crocodile that took a bite out of the cover and devour the title this week. In addition to all this bookish fun, I will be sending out various author interview questions this week, writing the jacket copy for two travel guides (NY and LA purely by happenstance. How's that for karma!) I will also have an upcoming interview (someone else asking me questions--woot woot!) posted on http://www.lkeditorial.com/ which I will link here for my awesome followers.

Basically this all comes down to yet another thank you for all the support and amazing feedback everyone has given me over the past months. I hope everyone has a wonderful week, and stay tuned as I will be blogging from the beach!

Peace & Pages,
Keri

Books on a Plane

So this past week was New York Book Week and there were so many cool things going on in NYC. Along with appearances by authors in oodles of cool venues, there were book parties galore and of course, BEA. After this deluge of pages and publishing, I am off for a retreat to California...I KNOW! I'm so excited I am already packing and I leave on Thursday =D

That said, I am looking for bookish delights while on the west coast. I may or may not extend the trip, but am there for sure until Wednesday the 20th and will be based in LA and hope to spend time in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara. If anyone has suggestions for bookstores, cool cafes, music or spoken word venues, bring em on! Share in comments or email away: kenglish32@gmail.com

I'll be blogging poolside and writing by the sea and can't wait to share it all with you. Thank you again to all the AWESOME bloggers, authors and everyone else I met at BEA this week. It was a pleasure spending days surrounded by books and book people and look forward to keeping in touch.

And let me know: what should I read (first) on the plane!??

Follow me, I'll be following you!

BEA Bloggers Conference

Hey All!

After some deliberation as to which conferences and author events to focus on, there is no way I was passing up Book Expo America's Blogger's Conference tomorrow. I will be exploring BEA this week and writing about the experience for www.indiereader.com where you can also see the results of the 2012 Indie Reader Discovery Awards which were announced today at BEA. Kudos to all the winners!

In addition to the Blogger's Conference, I will be checking out the rest of BEA and on the prowl for people to interview, so if you are there or will be there, let me know: kenglish32@gmail.com and we can plan to meet up. BTW, Indie Authors: Don't forget to get your book on Good Reads and give it a Facebook Page! I've seen so many good titles on both and believe me, people are looking ;-)

As my early followers know, this blog was started as a way to express the angst of my being stuck in a dead zone of stress, writer's congestion (though not a full block I suppose, or we wouldn't be here!) and all over yuckyness. That said, my work has developed while working with young writers in NYC, Brooklyn and in all parts of New Jersey. While teaching others to perfect the craft I have simultaneously been working on my own short story collection that now, at long last, has a title: Under The Overpass.

I look forward to sharing more about my upcoming book as it moves through all the proper channels and nears it's papery and of course, digital birth. In the meantime, I'd love to connect with you: www.facebook.com/undertheoverpass and welcome all suggestions and feedback throughout the process of pen to paper to press to people!

See you at BEA!
