Day of Zucchini I'm not even kidding!

If you know me at all, you know that there is one thing I've got in super abundance this summer: ZUCCHINI! Believe it or not, August 8th is National Zucchini Day...also known as "Sneak a Zucchini onto your Neighbor's Porch Day"

I swear I'm not making this up! Click HERE if you don't believe me!

Why, you ask is this so funny? Well, I have been eating this green delight all summer since my green thumbed other half has a knack for growing them. Thankfully we love the little suckers...OK not little actually--we picked one last week that weighed FOUR POUNDS! But wow are they delicious.

Anyway, I have this neighbor; a small, observant, besandled, mustachioed Indian dude. He is very nice when he talks, which is not as often as the rest of us do, and we have come to affectionately know him as Bobogee (See Bend it Like Beckham for explanation)

So every day, our Bobogee walks around slowly, with his hands folded gently behind his back. Sometimes he sits on one of the green benches in our courtyard. Sometimes he pushes his grandson in a stroller. Always wearing a white T-Shirt (HANES TAGLESS--but we will get to that later) and khaki or dark colored pants and brown sandals. He enjoys perusing the gardens we have in little plots around the complex.

One day while typing at my desktop computer which faces a window (or else I'd have less to write about) I hear a loud incantation below the sill.

"Zucchiniiiii"

I stop typing for a sec and think: "No way. I'm hearing things." and I go back to work on my article.

A moment later I hear again, "Zuuuucchhhiiiinnniiii" and this time it has a question mark at the end.

Peering over the window sill I see little Bobogee in my garden looking up at me. He's about five feet tall and the windows are over six off the ground so I didn't even know he was lurking out there. I suppose he could see me though.

Shocked and stifling laughter, I waved and said "Hey how's it going? Are you talking to me...in my house?"  To which he replied "Zucchini?"

What I thought was a language barrier was really bad hearing on his part.  He finally explained this to us directly in decent English about a year later (no really an entire year went by with me thinking all this guy knew in English was names of veggies he spied in the gardens) and now we talk outside and he reads lips and knows a lot about gardening, cooking and all the local gossip.

So that's one of the many Bobogee stories. And TODAY this blog is dedicated to him.

OK, so this is what I've got for you:
